The table below shows how consumers spend their money on different categories of items in five countries, namely Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Turkey in 2002.

It is obvious that Turkish people spent the highest expenditure on food, drinks, tobacco and leisure, education. While that, the highest amount of money spent on clothing and footwear was recorded in Italy. Overall, money allocated for food, drinks and tobacco always stayed at the dominant position in all five countries.

Approximately one third of the money is spent on food, drinks and tobacco in Turkey, followed by Ireland as the second-highest with 28.91%. This country also had the highest expenditure on leisure and education, with 4.35%. The largest amount of money spent on clothing and footwear belonged to Italy, with exactly 9%.

The lowest percentage of money on food, drinks and tobacco was 15.77% in Sweden, and this nation also had the lowest figure for clothing and footwear, accounting for only 5.40%. Leisure and education, however, seemed to be least preferred by Ireland, as only 2.21% of money is spent on this category.
