The tables below give information about sales of Fairtrade*-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five European countries. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The tables represent sale figures of two Fairtrade-labelled products in five countries in the years 1999 and 2004.

Overall, it is evident that Fairtrade coffee sales rose between the five years in every surveyed country. The majority of the nations also witnessed a rise in the consumption of Fairtrade-labelled bananas.

Looking at the first table more closely, one can see that the UK spent more money on Fairtrade coffee compared to any of the remaining countries, while also having the most dramatic rise in sales, from 1.5 million to 20 million euros. Switzerland and Belgium also witnessed a sharp increase, from 3 million to 6 million euros for the former, and from 1 million to 1.7 million euros for the latter. Less significant were the climbs of 200 thousand euros seen in Denmark and Sweden.

As for sales of Fairtrade-labelled bananas, the UK remained the leading market, tripling in consumption to 47 million euros in 2004. Growth was also seen in Switzerland, from 1 million to 5.5 million euros, an in Denmark, from 600 thousand to 4 million euros. By contrast, both Belgium and Sweden halved in sales of Fairtrade-labelled bananas.
