The two graphs show the main sources of energy in the USA in the 1980s and the 1990s.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the changes which occurred.

The pie charts illustrate how America’s energy needs were supplied by five major sources in two different years 1980s and 1990s.

Overall, in both years, the biggest contributor to America’s energy needs was oil, while water supplied the least amount of energy. Meanwhile, nuclear energy saw an upward trend in 10 years.

The amount of energy produced by oil in the USA accounted for 42%, raking the first place among others surveyed in 1980. This figure declining to around a third, namely 33%, however, still being the largest proportion of energy production among factors recorded. When it comes to nuclear power, this source supplied 5% of America’s energy needs, just one-eighth of those supplied by oil in 1980 and this then underwent a significant rise of 5% in 1990.

Being the second major source of energy in the USA in 1980, natural gas made up 26% in generating energy, which fell by 1% to a quarter of all energy supplied in 1990. By contrast, production by coal increased from 22% to 27% in 1990, overtaking natural gas to take the runner-up in this year.
