Internet has brought a revolution in the modern world. Platforms like facebook, instagram, twitter are most common surfed by public globally. Although these sources keeps us connected on day today basis virtually with our friends and relatives at the same time it also creates introvert behavior, avoidance of actual meeting and physical connections to our dear ones. Hence, this essay intends to discuss the demerits of this happening over the merits.
Video calls, message facilities, gifs all together enhances the experience of online communication, as well as features of Facebook such as reminding birthdays of our friends helps us to wish them on just one click without giving much effort. For example, my brother moved to Canada for higher education last year, but with the help of video call, we can talk to him at any time at our convenience, due to which feeling of separation is not felt intense. These benefits makes the use of social media more common among us.
On the other hand, in contradiction to these gains, there are loop falls attached to it. As people are using sites for communication, these creates introversion side in them, people have 100 friends for instance on facebook but do not know the name of his/her neighbor. Efforts for maintaining relationship are not given, as physical meetings are avoided due to use of social sites. Also over using these applications increases the screen time of the day, as per a recent study over 6 hours spent on screen and gadgets in an entire day 50% of time is utilized on social platforms, these proves to be harmful for eyesight too, as experts nowadays have started preaching traditional ways of meeting friends and families over virtual.
Avoiding usage of social media completely is almost unavoidable, but could be regulated if people try and understand the demerits of it. Overall the demerits of using social media are weighed than merits, as using these apps makes us feel that we are getting close to our dear ones but in reality it is creating barrier between us.
