40-W1

In the reading passage, the author clams that people can by no means maintain a permanent human presence on Venus. However, the following listening material entirely challenged the statement made by the writer. The speaker contends that it is possible to set up a permanent station on Venus by establishing a station floating above the surface by 50 kilometers.

The author sates that the pressure on the surface of Venus was too high to survive for human beings, and both people and equipment cannot avoid being crashed. However, the lecturer argues that since the pressure decreases as high up the atmosphere, the pressure in the station will be ambiguously equal to that on earth, which means there is no danger being crashed.

According to the professor in the lecture, the demanding of water and oxygen will no longer be a problem. Although there is little water and oxygen in the atmosphere of Venus, as the article saying, there are chemical process that could be used to make them using materials that are easily to be obtained from the atmosphere of Venus. This point disagrees with statement demonstrated in the reading material.

Disagreeing with the opinion in the reading that people could not use solar power cells and then power their machines and equipment because most of the sunlight was prevented by the thick clouds of Venus. The speaker argues this in two angles: first, the clouds above the station will be much thinner because of the height, so there are considerable sunlight can go through the clouds; second, the station can gain more light by making use of the reflection from clouds below it. Therefore, the combination of both direct sunlight from the sun and the reflection from below clouds is enough to power the station.
