47-W1

This topic is regarding whether Pterosaurs are capable of powered flight. The listening and the reading contents hold different perspectives on it.
To begin with, the reading indicates that the Pterosaurs are unable to produce enough energy for powered flight because they are cold-blooded and have a slow metabolism. However, the lecture argues that the Pterosaurs are warm-blooded so that they can produce enough energy for the powered flight according to the recent study of their fossils which testifies the presence of dense hair cover, a typical character of warm-blooded animals to keep body temperature.
Secondly, according to the reading passage, the Pterosaurs can't make the powered flight because they are too weight. Nevertheless, the speaker refutes and says that the Pterosaurs are in fact unusually light for its size. The reason is that their bones are hollow, which makes their weight low enough to keep airborne by powered flight.
Finally, the lecture also denies the Pterosaurs' inability of jumping from their legs or running fast enough to launch themselves into the air as the reading passage puts forth. The reason is that the Pterosaurs are different from birds when they take off from the ground. Birds only use two limbs, however Pterosaurs use four limbs to help them push off from the ground. And they can also run fast enough or jump high enough to launch themselves with the help of four limbs.
To sum up, the reasons proposed by the reading are not satisfactory and comprehensive enough to draw the conclusion.
