Air purifiers
Both the reading and the lecture are about "Air purifiers". Toxic substances get trapped in the fiber when particles come into contact with it. Therefore, cleans the surrounding air. However, the speaker states that HEPA filter does not remove tiny particles from the air. The particles and microbes of less than 0.3 micrometer pass through fiber sheets and released back into the air. Thus, HEPA filters are useful in removing large particles but not small ones.
Next, the professor further delves into the details by pointing that ozone generating air purifiers are dangerous to use. High concentration of ozone can eliminate bad odor from the atmosphere but it reacts with the skin, eyes and other body parts and causes long term damage. It's effect is basically similar to exposing to gasoline. Hence, this is not an efficient air purifier. These claims refutes the writer's implication about ozone generating air filters. According to the reading, ozone reacts with harmful chemicals in the air and eliminates unpleasant smell. Moreover, ozone works as an air freshener.
Ultimately, the article wraps its argument by declaring third kind of air filter which is UV air purifier. UV air purifier remove microscopic particles by directly interacting with the air and hazardous bacteria. In contrast, the speaker rebuts this point by showing the inaccuracy of the author that UV filters does not effectively clean the air. It improves the quality of air but does not eliminate fumes of cigarette and other chemicals. Thus, this air purifier cannot protect humans from air pollution.
