Altruism
The article states Altruism is the opposite of selfishness, in which individuals portray selfless acts for others and gain nothing for themselves. The reading provides two great examples of it as Humans and Meerkat. The article cites points to support why both species portrays altruism. However, the professor refutes all the point made in the passage and explains the reason for it.
First, the article states that humans show a great deed of Altruism by sharing food with strangers and donating body organs to family or strangers. The professor refutes the point by stating that when a person donates body organ, they get rewarded and thus the act cannot be considered as Altruism. She casts an example as when someone donates a kidney to a family member or stranger, they might receive rewards as appreciation from the community and fellow neighbors. Sometimes they even get valuable rewards from the family of the stranger whom they donated the organ.
Second, the article states an example of the meerkat of Africa. It states that in a group of the meerkat, an individual act as a sentinel and looks out for predator while others hunt and eat food. The sentinel puts itself in great danger, gaining nothing and shows a great example of Altruism. However, the professor posits that sentinel always eats before the others, so that is why others eat without him. The professor also explains that other meerkat’s who are in search of food are in more danger than sentinel as they are away from the safe area.
In addition to this, She explains that in case of a predator sentinel might escape first after sounding the alarm.
Thus, the professor explains that neither human nor meerkat portrays the act of altruism and refutes all the points from the article with a specific reason.
