Amtrak is an intercity train service currently owned by the United States government There are a number of critics who believe that the government should not own Amtrak and that Amtrak should be sold to a privately owned company These critics put forward

The reading and the lecture are both about the Amtrack train, which is owned by the government in the United States. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that this train should be sold to the private sector. In the listening passage, the writer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws in the writer's claims. In fact, the professor believes that this suggestions will not solve any problem and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states this train provides its service to all citizens in the country and in so many far places around the USA without covering the cost of operating the train. The article mentions that the government loses a lot of money each year because of the unused routes, so if the government sells this train the private companies will cut these routes. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that these people cannot understand that these routes were made not for making money, but its made for providing services for transporting the citizens. Additionally, she points out that people who lived in far places have the same rights as the people who live in common areas, and it's not fair to cut these routes.

Secondly, the author suggests that government does not support the other private sectors such as airlines, so the ticket price on the train is less than in the other types of transportation. In the article is said that this competition is unfair to the other sectors against the public sector. Again, the speaker specifically asserts in this idea by suggesting that the government supports all kinds of transport in the country including airlines which give them weather services. He goes on to say that the other public sectors could not be existing without support from the government.

Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by supporting that rail travel is unimportant in the country because most users use their cars to travel long distances, Also the authorities should spend this amount of support in other places such as improving the highway system. Unsurprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that people use their cars because these trains are not fast and affordable for them. He notes that people in other countries like Japan and Europe use their cars because the trains have a high speed and it’s popular, Moreover the government should improve the service of the trains.
