In its effort to serve citizens in all parts of the country, Amtrak maintains routes even in remote and less populated areas. Those routes are not used by enough passengers to cover the cost of maintaining them. The amount of money lost every year due to underuse is sizeable: the government loses up to several hundred dollars per passenger on some routes: and the total losses due to underuse add up to hundreds of millions of dollars every year If Amtrak was privatized, these unprofitable routes could be cut.

A large majority of intercity travelers use other means of transport, such as private cars. The critics argue that rather than finance Amtrak, the government should direct its funding at maintaining and improving the highway system so that intercity car travel becomes faster and more efficient.

The lecturer opposes this pointing the fact that government supports airline services by building air traffic towers for free, paying air traffic officers, and funding weather satelites for them to use in their weather predictions. So the government is already funding and spending big amount of revenue for airline companies.
Lastely, the article points that Rail travel is not used much by citizens and the most popular means of transportation is cars saying that the government should spend more money on maintaining and improving highways. The lecturer contradicts this by saying that the Rail system is not popular due to out of date systems and low speed. She affirms this by making examples of Japan and Europe saying that due to investments done the railroad is fast and most people in those countries use trains to travel due to this. Therefore, the government needs to invest more into Railroads to improve the service.
