Essay topics:

Bears are mammals of the family Ursidae. Bears are classified as caniforms, or doglike
carnivorans, with the pinnipeds being their closest living relatives. Although there are only
eight living species of bear, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats
throughout the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere. Bears are
found on the continents of North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. There are a few
things to keep in mind about bears.
When bears lose their fear of people, they become more likely to attack. Therefore, in
communities where bears and humans live in close proximity to each other, and, if the people
in those communities feed the bears, the bears will recognize humans as a food source,
hence making them more likely to attack humans in the future.
Bears are naturally aggressive toward humans. This aggression may be displayed by the bear
standing on its hind legs, a sure signal that it is preparing to charge its victim. In addition,
before attacking humans, bears are known to huff and growl or even slap the ground, again
indicating that they are about to attack.
If you are confronted with an attacking bear, there are three things that you can do which
may protect you from these predators. First, if the bear charges, run away as fast as you can.
Second, if there is a tree nearby, climb it quickly, for most bears are unable to follow you up
the tree. Third, as a last resort, the best defense against a bear is a gun. Shoot it as many
times as you can, which will make it less likely to attack you.

Writing Prompt: Summarize the main points in the lecture explaining how they oppose the main points
in the reading passage.

The reading passage and lecturer both talk about bears. While the author thinks that it can be dangerous for humans to coexist with bears, the lecturer feels that it is safe.

First of all, according to the reading passage, When bears don't fear someone, they are more likely to attack them. Therefore, people who feed the bear and stay close to them are more likely to be attacked by bears since they see them as a food source. However, the lecturer disputes this argument. He thinks that bears won’t attack people whom he trusts. To bolster his claims he provides an example of Minnesota where people and bears are living together for 40 years. He also provides an example of Pennsylvania where 7000 people live with 21 bears.

Secondly, the author of the reading passage thinks that bears are aggressive. He mentions some early signs such as standing on the hind leg, luft and growl and slapping the ground that can act as an indication of a bear attack. However, the lecturer thinks the opposite. The lecturer claims that when the bear is standing on the hind leg he is trying to get a better view. Similarly, Luft and growl are to communicate dominance.

Lastly, the author claims that the best way to rescue from a bear attack is to Run, Climb, and use a gun. However, the lecturer challenges this argument. He states that instead of running we should talk to the bear, we should not climb to try as even bears are capable to climb the tree and it's better to use lethal pepper spray instead of a gun on the bear.

In conclusion, both the reading passage and the lecturer talks about bears and ways to rescue from bears. However, the lecturer challenges 3 main points specified by the author.
