The benefits and downsides of Laser eye surgery.
In this set of material, the problem discussed is about laser eye surgery. In the reading part the author mentions some points which makes eye laser surgery too costly, not efficient, even dangerous. While, the lecturer points out the weaknesses of the author’s reasons and proves that the eye laser surgery is not to costly, effective and safe way of vision correction.
First of all, the author highlights that the price of this procedure is too high which is unaffordable for most of pat of patients. In his turn the lecturer mentions that the price is decreasing because of two factors. First, the cost of technology goes down and the competition in this part of medical services goes up which make the price of eye laser surgery decrease. That is why the procedure is more affordable than in the past.
The authors second reason is about post-operative problems that can appear. Moreover, the author mentions some cases when the patients had serious problems after the surgery like detachment of the cornea or too long recovery period. The lecturer finds this point at least ridiculous because they are exaggerated. That is because the detachment of the cornea took place because the patient climbed the Everest during the recovery period, and the real duration of the recovery period is only two or three days.
Beyond that, the author points out the need of going back for a new eye procedure in some years even months, which make surgery inefficient. The lecturer contradicts this reason with the facts that some patients need to go back only after twenty years after surgery or more. That is why the lecturer finds that the laser eye surgery is on of the most effective procedures.
To sum up, in these two passages the author and the lecturer present their conflicting views about laser eye surgery. The author mentions some reason against the surgery, while the lecturer points out reasonable doubts about them.
