Chaco great houses
The speaker talks about various reasons why the arguments mentioned in the passage regarding the purpose of the Chaco great houses are wrong.
First, though the Chaco great houses look similar to “apartment buildings” at Taos from outside, they look different on the inside. The Chaco great houses have very few fireplaces in them as compared to the number of rooms they have. The Chaco great houses have rooms that can accomodate 100 families and only have very few fireplaces that can support no more than 10 families. This contradicts the passage that claims the Chaco great houses were used as residential dwellings.
Second, the evidence does not imply that the great Chaco houses were used for storing food like maize as suggested in the passage. People did not find any traces of maize grain or large maize containers from the excavations. Had it been used for storing food, people would have at least maize grains that spilled all over the floor. This evidence rebuts the passage that argues these houses were used for storing food.
Finally, people found lots of other material in the mound Pueblo Alto along with broken pots. The deposit includes a lot of building materials like tools, sandstone which strongly suggest that the mound was a dump of construction material. And the brokens pots found in the mound must have been the left overs in which the construction workers had their meals. This evidence is in contrast to what the passage states that the Chacos great houses were centers for ceremonies.
