Chaco structures

Essay topics:

Chaco structures

The passage puts forth various plausible explanations as to how the Chaco structures were used. The lecturer, however, states that none of these explanations are convincing given the evidence found near them.

Firstly, from outside, the Chaco structures may look like residential buildings. However, if one examines the interiors of these structures, they would come to the conclusion that they were not used as residential buildings because of the number of fire places in the structures. The number of fireplaces in the structures support not more than ten families where as the space available can accommodate more than hundred families. Given this disparity, it is not likely that they were used as residential buildings. This evidence casts doubt on the claim made in the passage which states that the Chaco structures could have been residential dwellings based on their facade.

Secondly, there is no evidence found indicating that they were used as food storage facilities. If they were used to store food, then one should find remains of maize grains or food containers in the excavations. However, nothing of that sort was found indicating that there were not used as food storage facilities contrary to the passage which argues that it could have been one of the purposes of the structures.

Finally, it is true that several broken pots were found in a mound near Pueblo Alto. However, besides broken pots, other materials, especially building materials like sand, stones, etc were also found in the mound. This implies that mound was probably a waste dump. This evidence refutes the passage that claims that the structures would have been used for ceremonial activities.
