Easter island population

Essay topics:

Easter island population

The reading passage discusses about the reasons which led to the demise of a civilization on the Easter Island just before 19th century. The lecturer disagrees with the reasons mentioned in the reading and attack the claims made in the reading passage.

First of all, the reading states that one of the reasons of the demise of the civilization is the infestation of rats that were brought by the by the original inhabitants. By eating seeds of the palm trees, these rats created deforestation that in turn eroded soil and food production became difficult. The professor refutes these claims. He says that the human remains that were found on the island suggested that these people were fishers. Seafood contributed about 60% of the diet. Moreover, these people also had the capability to produce crops like potatoe by creating a rock garden with rich soil. Due to these reasons, the lecturer says that the deforestation caused by rats cannot be the reason for this civilization to collapse.

Secondly, the reading suggests that some internal warfare might have happened as per the excavations that suggested usage of thousands of curved small blades called Mata'a. The lecturer challenges this claim. He goes on to say a lot of these weapons were not pointed and sharp. This suggests that these were not weapons but tools used to build houses or statues made from rocks.

Thirdly, the reading mentions that the exposure to the outside world may have been one of the reasons for the decline of the population. The local people on the island would not be immune to the diseases which the outside people carried with them and this may have caused the population to decline. The lecturer undermines this claim. He points out that when the Europeans and South Americans came, the population was just 3000 and recent excavations have shown that the population was 20000 in the 17th century. So, the population decline would have started after the 17th century and the diseases carried by the outside world might not have played any role in the polulation decline.
