Ecocertification
The article here discusses whether wood companies in the U.S. should seek ecocertification or not. The author says that wood companies should not seek for ecocertification and sell ecocertified wood in the U.S. The lecturer disagrees. He says that the wood companies should seek ecocertification and attack the claims made by the author.
Firstly, the author says that the Americans will not pay any attention to the ecological label and in general, the American consumers are skeptical about advertising claims. The lecturer refutes these claims. He says that the American consumers do not treat all the advertisements in the same way. They are able to distinguish the advertising claims made by their own product or any independent agencies. Since the American consumers are in favor of the independent agencies and these agencies have a reputation for being trustworthy to the American consumers, the claim that Americans will be skeptical about the advertising claims do not hold true.
Secondly, the author claims that the price of ecocertified wood will be high as the companies will have to account for the additional cost to get the certification. The lecturer disagrees with the idea. He points out that price alone matters only if the price of one product is much higher than its competitors. Talking about wood, the price of ecocertified wood is only 5% higher compared to the normal wood, so the high price would not be of that much concern. He further adds that buying ecocertified wood will induce a sense of value to protect environment to the American consumers which they look forward to.
Thirdly, the author claims that it pursuing for ecocertification makes sense only if the companies are looking to sell their wood abroad. The American companies sell most of their stocks in the U.S. and the custimers are satisfied with the product. The lecturer does not agree with this claim. He says that there is a chance that a foreign company might venture into the U.S. and capture the market if the U.S. companies are too slow to act. Foreign companies will crowd in the U.S. market in selling ecocertified wood which the domestic companies will not be able to do if they do not pursue for the certification.
Thus, there is a disagreement on the claims made by the lecturer and the author on the topic of whether American companies should pursue for ecocerticiation
