Eco-Friendly Wood

Essay topics:

Eco-Friendly Wood

The reading passage and lecture are both about the Eco-certification, which is certification for woods companies that their products are meeting ecological standards by conserving resources and recycling materials. The author of the reading believes that it is unlikely that American wood companies will bother about the certification for several reasons. The lecturer casts doubts on the claims made in the reading article. He thinks that many wood companies in United States will go for eco-certification.
First of all, the author points out that Americans are exposed to so much of advertising, which they will hardly value to eco-certified label. It is mentioned that Americans do not trust much of the advertisements. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She states that Consumers in United States don’t treat all advertisements same. Instead they have a lot of confidence in claims made by independent certification agencies.
Secondly, the author contends that earning a certification label for wood companies in United States will increase the costs. The articles notes that, American consumers are driven by price factor strongly and will choose cheaper wood. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests that earning a certification will not increase the price of the wood by a huge percentage. She claims that it will be only around five percent difference in the price as it will be chosen by environment friendly consumers.
Finally the author states that, for most of the wood companies getting a certification would not benefit as they sell most of their products in United States. On the other hand, lecturer posits that US wood companies definitely pay attention to what’s going in world, as there might be foreign companies might enter American markets offering eco-certified woods, that domestic companies do not.
