the effect of agriculture on the population of birds
The text and the lecture both discuss the population of birds and how human activities like agriculture can affect their population. The text claims that because of the human activities and agriculture, the population of birds has decreased and provides three reasons of support. On the other hand, the professor refutes all stated claims and states her own opinion.
First, The text explains that as the the result of the growth of human population and settelments, the number of birds has decreased. It states that by increasing buildings and malls, there will be less habitat for birds, and it decreases their population. The professor goes against this point. She states that however, the population of some spicies has decreased, but that the growth of human population has created better and larger habitats for other birds, and the proof of this claims is the number of different birds such as falkon which can be seen in cities.
Second, the text claims that as the egricultural activities increase, more habitats of birds are destructed, and as its result the number of birds decreases. The professor refutes this point, and says that we may assume that agriculture may destroy some habitats of birds, but it is not like this in the United States. She points that by the increase of productivity of crops the need of more lands for agriculture is declined, and it shows that agriculture do not have a negative effect on the habitats of birds and their population.
Third, the text states that chemical pesticides can easily enter to the food and water chain of animals like birds, and it can kill them or ceases them from reproducing. The text also states that by increase in the demand of pesticides, the number of birds which will be killed increases too. The professor rejects this point, and says that we can not predict the effects of pesticides. She states that people now are more aware of the effects of pesticides on environment, and as the result, they will decrease the use of this chemicals. She also states that by using new and less toxic pesticides we can decrease their harmful effects, and also there is a trend in pesticides production which produce more specialized pesticides, and because birds are not interested in these chemicals will not eat them like the past.
