extinction of giant Steller's sea cow
Both the lecture and the reading discuss extinction of giant Steller's sea cow, an enormous marine mammal. The author of extract provides three theories explained the cause of such a huge extinction. In contrast, the professor in the lecture firmly denies all of the author's reasons by giving some declarations.
First and foremost, according to the passage, native Siberian haunter are on of the candidate for the above-mentioned surmise. The reason bringing such a thought is that these specific animals were a reliable source of food in harsh environmental condition. The speaker in the lecture offset this hypothesis by referring to the population of native Siberian people and the number and size of those animals before extinction. He asserts that Siberia's population was not as big to haunt such a great population of steller's sea cows, especially by considering their huge size those people if needed to haunt them, a small number of these animals were enough for them.
The professor in the lecture maintains that if there had been an ecosystems' disturbance that caused kelp shortage, it would have diminished other marine animals' foods sources. He justifies his assertion by mentioning that any another demise did not report until now.
The text lasting insists that European fur traders could cause this extinction. Nevertheless, the professor in the lecture counters this indication by asserting that the extinction occurred soon after the European arrival in the Island. He explains that decrease of these animals had been started long before their arrival, so they could not be the main cause o the sea cow's demise.
