extinction of sea cow

Essay topics:

extinction of sea cow

TPO 34 W1

The reading and lecture are both about the extinction of sea cow. The author of the reading feels that Siberian people are one of the main reasons of sea cow extinction. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that Siberian and European people do not have any role in this case.

To begin with, the author argues that hunting a lot by the native people decreased the population of sea cows. The article mentions that as the sea caws were a plentiful source of food, overhunting them by people was the main reason of extinction. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that the population of people who were living there were not long, so they did not need a lot of these animals. Additionally, he states that these animals were huge which had made their hunting difficult.

Secondly, the writer asserts that ecosystems disturbances caused the mentioned extinction. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning animals which are similar to sea cows like whales. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that fishing ships did not report anything about the whales.

Finally, the author posits that European fur traders are one the causes. Moreover, it is stated in the article that the traders who had weapons might have killed a large number of the animals. In contrast, the lecture's position is that the extinction of sea cows occurred 100 years before starting the fur commercials.
