Fluoride as a way for treating water

Essay topics:

Fluoride as a way for treating water

Both the reading and lecture are talking about advantages and disadvantages of adding fluoride to the drinking water. Whereas the author claims that adding fluoride enhances the dental and bone structural health besides the purifying water, the lecturer believes that fluoride's effect can be detrimental to people.
While the reading asserts that existing fluoride in drinking water can prevent the onset of tooth decay, the professor mentions that most of the toothpaste has enough fluoride to protect the teeth, owing to this fact, countries such as Sweden and Netherlands eliminated this substance from their drinking water. Yet, they exhibit no decline in dental health.
The reading next mentions that fluoride can purify the water by acting as cleansing agent, the professor agrees but also says that since the fluoride is toxic, it discolors water pipes and lead to harmful side effects. Therefore, the adding process should be carefully monitored.
Finally, the reading states that the bone structures of people who drink water treated with fluoride have improved. However, the professor counters by saying that the rare form of bone cancer which mostly appears in young boys to is due to deposition of fluoride in the body. She also adds that exposing to the high amount of fluoride causes the bone structures prone to fracture.
