four-day work week instead of five-day one
In the reading passage provides information about mandatory policy which requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek instead of five-day workweek and they will receive 80 percent of their normal pay. The lecturer on the other hand refutes that and brings his points.
First, in the reading passage highlights that shortened workweek would increase company profit, because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer errors in their work. In the other hand professor mentions that in this situation companies should hire more employees and provide for them medical insurance that will cut their profit.
Second, according to the reading passage one of the primary benefits of offering this option is that it would reduce unemployment rate in the country. However, professor brings to the attention the point that companies could demand from employees to do five-day work in four days, so they will be overloaded and in time of crisis employees that work in four day would be fired first.
And finally, the reading passage suggests that employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time they could spend much time with family. While lecturer mentions that this could reduce their personal life and decrease their chance for advancing their career.
