a mandatory policy, requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working four-day workweek for 80% of the regular pay would benefit the economy as well as individual companies. Also, the employees who decided to take this option will benefit

This article states that a mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweek for four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option and provided three reasons of support. However, the professor explains that this wont help individual companies as well as employees and refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading claims that the shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert. The professor refutes this point by saying that hiring more people for doing the stuff for four days employee would cost more and more money as they will require training .He state that both type of employees have to give health benefits. The more employee will also require more desktops ans spaces which will cut down the companies profit .

Second, the article posits that it would reduce employment rates. However the professor says that its not guaranteed that company will hire new employees as he mentioned earlier that it is very costly to support more employee.According to professor , It may happen that company will make other employees to work overnight. Also they may expect more from the four days employees that they will work same amount of work in 4 days . So the current job will be more painful.

Third, the reading says that four-day workweek would be better for individual employees as they will have more free time. They could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities. The professor opposes this point by explaining that this 4 day workweek will reduce the quality of work. We also learn that they will be the first person to lose their jobs when their will be economic downtime. In case of promotion they will be given less preference as for management job the employee need to attend 5 days.
