Hail

The reading passage and the lecture are both about cloud seeding practice and its effectiveness in reducing hails, ice particles that fall from clouds. The author of the reading feels that cloud seeding can reduce the hails and the author provides some points in support of that. The lecturer challenges each of the points made by the author. She is of the opinion that cloud seeding cannot help reduce hails in the United States.

To begin with, the author claims that laboratory experiments have suggested that chemical silver iodine, when sprayed on the clouds, generates either rain or snow, which are not harmful for crops. This specific argument is challenged by the author. She says that the silver iodine can provide favorable results in laboratory conditions but not feasible in the real life. She further mentions that this practice can reduce or control the precipitation also, which might create drought conditions.

Secondly, the author contends that cloud seeding has been used in Asia and proved to be useful to control hails. In the passage, it is mentioned that various conutries across the globe have seccussfully controlled the precipitation in urban areas using cloud seeding. The lecturer counters this by stating that this technique will not be successful in the case of United States. She explains that cloud seeding was effective in urban areas which had pollutants in the atmosphere. The pollutants helped generating favourable conditions for controlling hails. However, she feels that it will be not effective in the unpopulated areas of uniter states agricultural fields.

FInally, the author contends that one study has found out the effects of cloud seeding to the fileds of united states. The passages says that areas where cloud seeding used, received less damaged due to hails. On the other hand, the lecturer says that it was not due to the cloud seeding. Further she states that the same was found in the neighoubouring areas also and it was because of the natural variation.
