Hail pieces of ice that form and fall from clouds instead of snow or rain has always been a problem for farmers in some areas of the United States Hail pellets can fall with great force and destroy crops in the field Over the last few decades a met

The reading asserts that cloud seeding that is a method of reducing hail, which cause damages to farm crops, is an effective approach. The lecturer, however, finds the idea dubious and casts doubt on the reasons proposed by the reading passage.

First of all, the reading claims that some laboratory experiments lead us to the conclusion that adding silver iodide to cold water vapor is a feasible solution for making light snow instead of hail pellets. Conversely, the speaker brings up the idea that this result is limited to laboratory conditions, and in the real life, adding silver iodide may cause drought and hampers any precipitation from sky like snow, rain and hail. As a result, farmers will deal with another problem which is lack of water.

Furthermore, the author holds the view that this method is tested and lucrative in urban areas of Asia, so it is practical in United States too. In contrast, the professor underlines the fact that air pollution, which is common in urban areas, makes a favorable condition for cloud seeding; however, there is not any insurance that this method will be feasible in farming regions which are devoid of any pollution.

Finally, the reading passage states that some local studies are done in central regions of United states which supports the value of cloud seeding and shows a reduction of hail damage to farm crops in examined areas, compared to previous years. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that a reduction of farm crops damaging is observed in many areas of United States, in that year, not only in the probed area. Consequently, this decrease is a result of natural variation in local weather and has nothing to do with cloud seeding.
