A huge marine mammal known as Steller’s sea cow once lived in the waters around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia. It was described in 1741 by Georg W. Steller, a naturalist who was among the first European to see one. In 1768 the animal became extinct. The reasons for the extinction are not clear. Here are three theories about the main cause of the extinction.

To begin with, the author argues that the native Siberian people hunted the sea cows over the hundred years. The article mentions that sea cow was a good source of food in a harsh environment. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that sea cows were 9 meters long and 10 tons in weight which was a massive huge creature and large in number. He also adds that Siberian people were not in a large group. Thus, it was not clear that a small group of Siberian people was the main cause of the extinction of this huge creature.
Secondly, the writers suggest that sea cow was depended on the kelp which was the main sources of food. Because of the ecological unbalance the kelp became decrease. The lecturer, however, rebut this by mentioning that kelp is also the food of the whales. But the growth of the whales is not declining. Then how was it possible for the sea cow?
Finally, many European fur trader came into Bering Island and hunted the sea cows for the weapons and also the cause of the extinction. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that European trader came into the Island in 1741 and sea cows started decline 1768. He notes that trader came into Island where already the population of sea cows decreased. Therefore, the reason is totally vague and insubstantial.
