Here are three theories about the main cause of the extinction.
First, the sea cows may have been overhunted by groups of native Siberian people. If this theory is correct, then the sea cow population would have originally been quite large, but hundreds of years of too much hunting by the native people diminished the number of sea cows. Sea cows were a good source of food in a harsh environment, so overhunting by native people could have been the main cause of extinction.
Second, the sea cow population may have become extinct because of ecosystem disturbances that caused a decline in their main source of food, kelp (a type of sea plant). Kelp populations respond negatively to a number of ecological changes. It is possible that ecological changes near Bering Island some time before 1768 caused a decrease of the kelp that the sea cows depended on.
Third, the main cause of extinction of the sea cows could have been European fur traders who came to the island after 1741. It is recorded that the fur traders caught the last sea cow in 1768. It thus seems reasonable to believe that hunting by European fur traders, who possessed weapons that allowed them to quickly kill a large number of the animals, was the main cause of the sea cow's extinction.

In the reading material, three theories are proposed to explain the extinction of the sea cows. The lecturer, however, hold a divergent attitude. He argues that there are problems with these explanations which can not be the main cause of the sea cow's extinction. Through relevant reasons and example, the lecturer refutes the hypotheses mentioned in the reading passage, and aptly substantiates his own viewpoints.

First of all, the lecturer points out that the Steller's sea cow has a massive body which is about 9 meters long and 10 ponds weight. A couple of sea cows can feed the native Siberian people for months. Since the population of the Siberian people is not very large, it is unlikely that their hunting behavior can cause the extinction of the sea cows.

Second, the lecturer suggests that no evidence can support the ecosystem disturbance hypothesis. If there are ecosystem disturbances during that period, the number other marine animals will also decrease, such as whales. However, there are no reports can indicate such a decline in other marine animals. This further refutes the theory mentioned in the reading passage.

Finally, the lecturer argues that the number of the sea cow is relative small at the time when European fur traders arrived. It indicates that the population of the sea cows starts to decline along before the arrival of European fur traders. which directly contradicts to the hypothesis maintained in the reading passage.
