Integrated writing TPO 55

The reading and the lecture are both about whether constructing a device for collecting water around trees in a desert is useful for desertification. The author provides three theories about the uselessness of this device that are proposed by some scientists. The lecturer, on other hand, is not convinced of this. He casts doubt on the claim made in the article by the author.
To begin with, the author claims that this device will be so costly for growing numerous trees which is difficult for some nations to afford that. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He mentioned that this theory is not convincing, owing to the fact that after a while device will be removed and could be exploited for many other trees. Therefore, one device can be made one time and used many times which is cost-effective.
Secondly, the writer suggests that persuading local people will not be easy, due to the fact that living in a harsh climate barely prevents them from food supplying for their families. Therefore, there is no reason to take care of those devices. The lecturer rebuts this by mentioning that maintaining those devices may bring about possible rewards for local habitats. First, that device could collect water for other vegetation which is a food source for locals. Second, when the trees grow larger, people can use them for setting fire and it is beneficial for them.
Finally, the author asserts that this device has limited ability to preserve water for a long time. After a long period of drought without any rainfall, the large trees will not be able to survive in the desert and will die. In Contrast, the lecturer's stance is that when the tree is young can expand its root in long distance to reach the water source underground. Existing water collecting devices at the early stages of the tree's life will help to grow, then the devices will be removed after achieving enough water source beneath the ground.
