Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most famous of all English novelists, and today her novels are more popular than ever, with several recently adapted as Hollywood movies. But we do not have many records of what she looked like. For a long time, the only accepted image of Austen was an amateur sketch of an adult Austen made by her sister Cassandra. However recently a professionally painted, full-length portrait of a teenage girl owned by a member of the Austen family has come up for sale. Although the professional painting is not titled Jane Austen, there are good reasons to believe she is the subject.
The reading and the lecture are both about Jane Austen who is a famous English novelist and many Hollywood movies are based on her novel. The author feels that the full-length portray that came up for sale is a real image of the teenage Jane Austen. The lecturer challenged the claim made by the author. He claims that the linked between the extended family and Jane is not convincing and connection to the extended family hardy prove that Jane Austen was a teenager.
To begin with, the argues that after the death of the Austen, her family gave permission to portrait the picture. The article also mentions that now the Austen family recognize that it is the young Jane. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He states that Jane Austen was dead for 70 years ago and recent family member never saw her. Additionally, he says that how her family actually identify her as a Jane Austen.
Secondly, the writer suggests that the portrait is closest to the Cassandra face who is Jane Austen sister and also elaborates that with the same nose, eyes, mouth and same shape. However, the lecturer rebuts this by mentioning that Jane Austen extended family is large. Thus, it is possible that the image is the other teenage girls of the family with the same face structure.
Thirdly, the author posits that Ozias Humphrey who was a professional painter and was active in the same period when Jane Austen was teenage. He also adds that may be Jane Austen family hired him for the paint. In contrast, the lecturer position is that William did not sell the canvas in London when Jane Austen was a teenager. The evidence showed that William started selling the canvas when Auten was 27 years old. Which clearly noted that the girl must be older than the portrait.
