Jane Austen 1775 1817 is one of the most famous of all English novelists and today her novels are more popular than ever with several recently adapted as Hollywood movies But we do not have many records of what she looked like For a long time the only acc

The reading piece and lecture are both regarding the authenticity of Jane Austen portrait, famous English novelist. According to the author of the reading the portrait is certainly of teenage Austen whereas the lecturer holds diametrically opposite opinion. The lecturer casts doubts on the main points made in the reading using three examples.

Preeminently, according to the reading, Austen's family have recognized the portrait and gave permission to the editors to use it. However, the lecturer refutes this point. She states that it was published in 1882 when Austen has been dead for 70 years. She points out that the family members who recognized the portrait never really saw her.

By the same token, the reading states that the sketch made by Jane's sister Cassandra of her in adulthood have strong resembles with the portrait which conveys us that the portrait is indeed of Jane. Nevertheless, the lecturer disputes this argument. She asserts that Jane had an extended family and had many young female cousin who were of her age. She also further explains that there is evidence that the portrait is of Jane's cousin Mary.

In winding up, the reading contends that style of painting is linked to a wealthy painter whom Austen family could afford and the painter was also active when Jane was a teenager. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that the actual cloth on which painting was made was brought from William who started selling canvas when Jane was twenty-seven years old. Thus the lecturer concludes , it could not possibly be the portrait of teenage Jane.
