The jet stream is an irregular band of wind that occurs in high altitudes at about 20,000 feet, that is, between 6 and 9 miles above the surface of the Earth. Consequently, the jet stream wanders near the top of the Earth’s troposphere, and, coincidenta

The reading and the lecture are both discussing on a topic called jet stream. The author of the reading mentions that jet stream is an irregular band of winds. Jet streams is generally like a river of air that flows from west to east. Normally, the jet stream moves faster than 57 miles an hour.

The author describes that In winter when the jet stream is the strongest, the winds are moving at the speed of 300 miles an hour. The reason for the winds to be stronger in winter is that the surface temperature contrast is more with the temperature of troposphere. In short the stronger the jet stream the more the wind will blow.

The lecturer states that the, In North America, the jet stream brings cold air in the north and the warm air in the south, hence it is called as polar jet stream. The cold air flows from Texas to mexico, while the hot air flows in Canada. The lecturer gave an example of an air travel. He mentions that, when the plane is moving in the direction of the jet stream the plane moves faster, as it is travelling in the direction same as wind.

On the other hand, when the plane is moving in the direction opposite to that of jet stream, the plane speed is reduced. This is because the plane is going against the direction of the wind. The plane also faces turbulence when it is going against the direction of the wind.

In conclusion, the reading mentions the description of the jet stream which is defined as an irregular bands of wind flowing in different locations and the lecturer gives example of the affect the air travel has because of the jet stream.
