The reading and the lecture both deal with some explanations about lambeosaur' crests. Whilst the author comments three possible theories about its functions, the lecturer opposes the author's comments.
First, the author claims that the crests could have provided a good sense of smell to this group of dinosaurs, because according to some analysis there were a good amount of blood vessels with high density present on it, which is related to the animals which are developed on it. In contrast, the lecturer believes that to affirm this point, lambeosaurs should have presented a well developed region in their brains in order to provide this ability, but it was not identified.
Second, the author mentions that those crest helped them to dimish their body temperature by providing a good surface area, as it can be noticed on stegosaurs, another species. However, the lecturer calls this argument into question by saying that stegosaurs have more than one crest so that they present a good surface area, but it does not happen with lambeosaurs.
Finally, the author points out that crests could have been used to make sound and improve the communication inside this species, because according to some researches, they presented good hearing characteristics. In contrast, the lecturer thinks that it would only be true if all species presented a well developed hearing sense, which was not identified yet.
