Like many creatures humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling In the case of humpback whales we may have found the answer they may be navigating by the stars

Both the reading and the lecture, discuss the idea that the humpback whales used stars for navigation. The author argues that the whales have the capacity to follow the stars' patterns. However, the professor refutes this idea by stating that the presented functions could be assigned to other functions.

To begin with, the passage claims that whales are smart and complex creature since they have powerful brains. Thus, he suppozed that they are capable of knowing the orientation through sound based techniques.
However, the lecturer rebuts this belief by pointing out that there's no connection between intelligence and following stars since some birds such as the duck which is not smart can follow the stars. Thus, It's just the extinct.

Secondly, The author asserts that whales migrate in straight lines for long distances. The fact that they couldn't rely on land indications made him belive that they follow the stars.
Nevertheless, the lecturer challenges this idea by mentioning that whales use a substance which is sensible to the magnetic field. Hence, the whale relies on external forces other than the stars.

Ultimately, according to the passage humpback whales could be spy-hopping since they were noticed exhibiting unusual behavior while floating and looking straightly.
Yet, the professor refuses this claim. She explains the sharks hunt by skyhopping and even during the day. Which indicates that this hypothesis is incorrect.
