This material addresses the question of whether ethanol fuel is a good alternative to gasoline in the Northern America. The reading passage suggests that the disadvantages of ethanol fuel outweigh its advantages. The lecturer, on the other hand, refutes this information by stating that gasoline may be altered by ethanol fuel efficiently.
To begin with, the reading passage highlights that ethanol fuel will cause the same environmental problems as gasoline. This is because ethanol releases carbon dioxide, which leads to global warming. Meanwhile, the professor casts doubt on this and argues that ethanol will not add to global warming since the process of growing of plants such as corn - a source of ethanol, absorbs carbon dioxide as an element of its nutrition.
Additionally, the article posits that the production of large amounts of plants needed for ethanol will decrease significantly the source of animals' feeding. However, the professor advocates a different approach and provides the following details. Namely, he mentions that ethanol may be produced from the parts of the plants that are not used as food for animals.
Finally, the author invites attention to the fact that the prices of ethanol fuel and of gasoline are competitive because of the subsidies of government; consequently ethanol will cost much more without state financing. This goes counter to the information in the listening passage, according to which, in future the increase of ethanol production will drop the price for ethanol by 40 per cent since the more of product is produced, the lesser is its price.
