OG1 - meerkat altruistic actions

Both the reading and the lecture discuss altruism and the unselfish actions among animals. The passage brings the meerkat, an African mammal, as an example which sacrifices its food and security to help other members of the group, and mentions three reasons to defend its claim. The lecturer stands on the other side, contradicting all the facts and ideas which will be discussed in the next paragraphs.

Firstly, the text suggests that in the group of the meerkat, an individual often standing guard and reporting the environmental situation. In this regard, if a predator comes close to the location, the guard gives an alarm to the others to run and find shelter. Therefore, the individual meerkat obtains nothing and is prone to the great peril of being hunted. However, the professor points out that the new studies which investigate meerkats much carefully than ever have done before states that the guard individual tends to eat before starting its mission, and it has a full stomach while looking around.

Secondly, the passage mentions that after issuing an alarm, every other meerkat flee, and the guard has to escape alone, which leads to a higher risk of being caught by the predator. In contrast, the speaker asserts that when the alarm issued, all the meerkat scatter that leads to the distraction of the predator from the conspicuous standing individual. Moreover, the one who first sees the predator is often closer to the burrow and is most likely to escape.

Finally, the reading claims that altruistic actions among people have a wide range from the sharing of food to the donation of body organs to family members which benefits the others and provide a little reward for the performer. On the other hand, the lecturer suggests that when someone donates one of his body organs to the other one, he receives appreciation from society and other family members, which means so much to him. Thus, he feels precious to some people, and an increase in self-worth makes him happier.
