Plain of Jars purpose - tpo 59
The overriding theme of the passage and the lecture is about the perpose of ancient Jars. The author of the reading suggests some ideas that may have been the actual perpose of the people who made these jars. The lecturer, on the other hand, thinks that these explanations are faulty. He refutes each and every notion made by the author.
To begin with, it is established by the reading that these jars may have been built for fermentation of food and drinks as native people believe. This specific argument is challenged by the speaker. He is of the opinion that if the peopose of these jars were formation, ancient people could have easily made them from clay. Making a stone jar with that size, is time consuming, expensive and hard.
Secondly, as the jars are placed on a root of trade, the writer suggests that the aim of the jars could have been to provide water for the traveling traders. The professor supports a mutually exclusive idea compared to that of the passage. He goes on to say that although the jars are near that root, but some revers and streams are also near the root. So it is highly unlikey that the actual perpose of the jars were to serve water to those humans.
Last but not least, it is stated by the text that since the jars were large enough to contain a human corpse, and there some artifacts like metal tools, jewlry, and glass beads have been found too, it can be plausible that the aim of the jars were to bury humans and their things. In contrast, The lecturer refutes this notion by demonstrating that burials have some covers to protect the body and its artifacts from wether and teefs. Thus, if the main perpose was barying , we would probably find some cover near or on the jars. Which is not the case according to the investigations. So this hypotesis is unlikely too.
