Populations of the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America, have been steadily declining for more than a century now, since about 1880. Scientists have advanced several hypotheses to explain this decline. One hypothesis

The reading states that populations of the yellow cedar have been steadily declining for more than a century now and mentions that scientists have advanced several hypotheses explain this decline. However, the professor explains that we do not know the reason for this declining and the article provides inadequate reasons so he refutes each of the hypotheses.

First, The article argues that the yellow cedar decline may be caused by insect parasites, specifically the cedar bark beetle which attack cedar trees. Nevertheless, the professor refutes this point by stating that this kind of cedar has much more resistance rather than other types of cedars. He also explains that the bark of the yellow cedar contains poisonous nectar which damage insects.

Second, the reading claims that bears might be a cause of this declining because they claw at the cedars in order to eat the tree bark can destroy trees. The professor contends that it is true that bears damage cedars but it no so much to destroy the trees. He adds that there are some islands with no bear that cedar died too. as a result, the bears cannot responsible for this declining.

Third, the article avers that gradual changes in climate may be responsible for this. However, the lecture opposes this point by saying that if freezing damage the yellow cedars, those might die more in high elevation but there is some evidence that shows that declining more happened in lower elevation.
