portrait of jane austen

Essay topics:

portrait of jane austen

The article is about the most famous English novelist portrait. In which the article supports that the portrait is of Jane Austen and is supported by little evidence. However, the professor sees flaws in this evidence and disagrees with each.

To begin with, the author states that her extended family was permitted to use the portrait as an illustration and the family recognized that the portrait is of Jane Austen only. However the professor disagree and stated that she died 17 years ago, her family had not seen her themselves and they must not be sure about it.

To carry on further, the author states that the portrait is as similar to that of Cassandra's sketch as of adult Jane Austen and matches every feature like eyebrow, nose, face, and overall shape. However the professor shows the other side of it, he stated that as Jane has extended family and many cousins, so there are chances that the sketch could be of any of them. He states that this cousin Mary and Caupia could have resembled the true subject because of this confusion and unsure about the sketch.

Another point made by the author is that this portrait was made by Humphrey, who was active at that time, as Jane's family was wealthy, they would have hired them for a portrait. The author also gave one more piece of evidence that the style links with Ozias Humphrey. The professor sees flaws in this claim and states that when we look at the back of this painting it illustrates that it was made by William lack, who was active when Jane was old.

So these are the two sides presented about the Jane Austen portrait, in which the author support that the painting is of her only. However, the professor disagrees with each claim and proves himself true and so that portrait was not a famous novelist James Austen.
