The passage and the lecture both talk about the function and construction of totem poles in the northwestern United States. The passage says that they show several things about communities in which they are made. It says they are religious worship and evidence of Native American culture. However, the lecture argues this theory by giving some supports to say totem poles were just some symbols of tribes.
The passage claims that religious worship is the main function of totem poles since the patterns of large animal figures on the poles represent the god. However, the lecture refutes this claim by talking about how the tribes protected these poles. It says they left these poles behind and did not protect them carefully. It claims that if they were religious worship the tribes would try hard to protect them.
The passage also talks about the position of the figures on these poles which can tell scholars about Native American culture. It claims that the position of the figures represent the level of their importance, the pictures on the top of the poles are the most important ones. Nevertheless, according to the lecture, the theory of passage is wrong. The lecture says that one kind of figure can find in different positions of poles, so it means the importance of figures did not determine the position of the figures.
