The reading discusses three reasons to believe it is because of pollution that here has been a decline of sea otters off of alaska and california, while the lecture discusses why predation, especially by orcas, is a better explanation of the evidence presented in the reading

The article states that environmental pollution is the reason for the decline of sea otter rather than predators in the Alaskan and Clalfornian sea and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor refutes this statement. She stated that predation is a more likely reason for the sea otter declines, and she opposes every of the author's reason.

First, the article claims that water sample from the sea revealed an increased level of chemicals that reduces otter's resistance to life threatening pollution, and are indirectly causes of the otter's death. The professor refutes this statement. She stated that the statement is weakened by the fact that it is hard to find dead sea otters on the shore of Alaskan that were a result of chemical pollution.

Second, the article states that only widely occuring predators like orca could cause a decline in the rate of otters, but this orcas prefer to hunt much larger prey. The professor does not agree with this conclusion, she states that, since whales have been discovered to disappear in the sea, orcas have been forced to change their diet, therefore, they go for much smaller mammals like otters. Also, this explains the reason for the decline in other small sea mammals like seals and sea lions.

Finally, the article stated that ocean current and other environemntal factors may have created an uneven concentration of pollutants along the coast. The professor opposes this point. She noted that the uneven pattern of otter can be explained by predation. She stated that orcas are large in size, and are not found in shallow waters, this explains the reason for otters not declining in shallow water but decling in other region.

This was how the professor was able to oppose the hypothesis of the passage and provide explanation that refutes each reason given in the article.
