Rembrandt

Essay topics:

Rembrandt

The reading and the lecture are both about a real author of a well-known painting "Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet". The author of the reading believes that counting this work to Rembrandt was a mistake. The lecturer challenges the statements made by the author. First of all, the author suggests that woman's outfit is confusing and contradicts painter's accuracy to details. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. He says that according to the last researches, it came to light, that a luxurious fur collar was not a part of an original image and was added only 100 years later. Secondly, the writer contends that a combination of light and shadow are at a low level. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that the original painting looked realistic, but was spoiled by a later owner. Finally, it is stated in the article that the whole work is situated on the panel made of several pieces of wood glued together and that is unprecedented from a perspective of Rembrandt's creations. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that it was made by a greedy successor in order to provide the portrait with higher price.
