Repenomamus robustus (R.robustus) was not an active hunter
The reading and the lecture are both about R.Robustus which is a mammal lived in 150 million years ago. The author of the reading believes that this mammal was not an active hunter in spite of finding residue of a dinosaur on its stomach. The lecturer casts doubts on this proposition made by the author. she thinks that R.robustus was a predatory animal which preys dinosaur.
To begin with, the author points out the size difference between the mammal and that particular type of dinosaur. It is mentioned that an adult R.robustus were two meters in height which were even smaller than psittacosaurs. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that Robustus was small in size but that doesn't mean it can't hunt, it could hunt 100 baby dinosaurs which were shorter than a grown-up mammal. Furthermore, she argues about size relationship which works in support of her conception that the mammals were twice as much as psittacosaurs,
Secondly, the author contends that the size of the leg and position of the leg resembles that robustus was adept for scavenging. The article notes that robustus was unable to run after prey which was more faster than him. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She made a comparison with another animal, a Tasmanian devil which also has shorter legs and the leg positions are also different. She elaborates on this by mentioning that Tasmanian Devil can run 15 Km/hr in spite of having shorter legs and anomality in leg position.
Finally, the author states about the absence of teeth marks on bones of a hunted animal. The article establishes that R.robustus attacked unprotected dinosaur nest with full of eggs and devour all the eggs where the small pssitacosaurs still inside the eggshell. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that this specific mammal had powerful jaws which are used for holding and grabbing a prey. Besides, there is no evidence of back teeth of robustus. As a result, Robustus may swallow whole prey or making it big pieces.
In conclusion, the professor effectively challenges the claims made in the article.
