Sea otter

Essay topics:

Sea otter

Both the lecture and the passage discuss the extinction of the sea otter, a small mammal that lives in the waters located from the coast of California to the one of Alaska. The passage suggests that the disappearance is due to environmental factors while the professor claims that it is due to a predator' invasion.
The reading passage argues that pollution may be the cause of the sea otter extinction because along the Alaskan coast there were pollutants such as oil rigs. In addition, the author pointed the fact that many other animals, such as whales, sharing the otter's habitat also declined, which supports the hypothesis of environmental issues as a cause of otters' extinction. The professor counters the idea of pollution and claims that predation is the reason why the population of sea otter declined.
The professor states that since there are no dead otter, it becomes obvious that they were consumed by predators. The professor disapprove the idea that the population of whales decreased because of environmental factors. He said that the number of whales declined because the extinction of sea ottles, one of their food source, made them starve and eventually die.
