What makes personality?
Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss what makes people's personalities. The reading argues that the way that humans deal with the never-ending conflicts that they face is what determines their personalities. On the contrary, the professor states that personality is determined by the vision that people have for themselves and how they ensure that they reach that type of life.
The passage states that humans are subjects to internal and external conflicts that shape their personalities. For instance, when one wakes up, he or she has to decide what to eat or to wear. Similarly people who want to live a particular type of life which is not accepted by their society experience conflicting feelings about whether or not they should conform to the society. The way one deals with the above conflicts is the determinant of his or her personality.
Unlike the author of the article, the professor thinks that personality is not determined by the ways of handling conflicts. Instead, it is shaped by how much the person is fulfilled. According to the professor, people are subjected to one single force, the need to live a satisfying life, that they always pursue. He goes on by saying that people have a representation of an ideal life.Their personalities is determined by the amount of work they put in to achieve that fulfilled life and how close they are to their perception of the perfect life they envision.
