The sea otter is a small mammal that lives in waters along the western coast of North America from California to Alaska. When some sea otter populations off the Alaskan coast started rapidly declining a few years ago, it caused much concern because sea ot

The reading and the listening passages are both about sea otter. While the reading passage mentions that the main cause for sea otter declining is pollution, the lecturer casts doubt on the explanation that the writer provides. She says it is the ongoing investigation has revealed that the declining is better to be explained by predation theory.

The author of the reading states that water sample from the Alaska coast revealed an increase in the chemical levels that decrease otters resistance to infection, which might be the reason for otters declining. However, the professor contends that this theory is weak because there is not otters body in the shore that explain that. Also, if this is true, other animals would be affected, but there is no evidence.

In addition, the article claims that other animals such as seals and sea lions were also declining. Also, it is mentioned that orchs prefer to hunt large animals. The professor, on the other hand, rebuts this point by stating that because of human hunters wheals change their places. Therefore, orchs start to consume smaller mammals such as seals, sea lions, and otters.

Finally, the reading passage explains that there is an uneven pattern of otter decline and that because pollution differs from place to place. The lecturer rebuts this point. She contends that because orchs can not enter the shallow places, therefore, they can not prey the small animals. Also, it is the preferable place for these animals.

All in all, the lecturer debunks all the three reasons in the lecture.
