Starting in the 1960s and continuing until the 1980s, sailors in Russian submarines patrolling the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean would occasionally hear strange sounds. These underwater noises reminded the submarine crews of frog croaks, so they called

When patrolling the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean from 1960s to 1980s, the russian sailors in submarines could hear strage sounds at times. In that the sounds resembled frog croaks, they named the sounds "quackers". They are sounded like there are something moving quickly with great agility, but the sonar in the submarines could not detect anything moving like this. Thus there are several speculations about the origins of the sounds. From the oecral whales which wanted to attracted mates with the sounds to giant squid which seemed to be curious about the submarines, even the submarines from other countires. However, the lecturer cast doubts on these theories.

Firstly, with different sea levels from submarines' when moving, the orca whales can not be the sound makers. The orca whales usually live in the surface water, while the submarines often moved in the deep sea. Thus the sounds heard by russian soldiers can not be the orca whales. Also, the submarines didn't detect them when the soldiers heard the sounds.

Secondly, the giant squids still live in that area while there is no quakers heard after the 1980s. In the passage, it indicates that as giant invertibrates living in the sea, the giant squids can not be detected by sonar because of their soft bodies, so the sounds may be from the squids which were likely to be curious about the submarines. While the sounds were heard froom 1960s to 1980s, then they stoped. Now the squids still live there thus this phnomenon could not be explianed by the curious squids.

Thirdly, there are no invisible submarines with silent engines being built. As the submarines can not have such speed and agility, the engines would make great sounds, while the soldiers did not find any submarines, so it was not other countires' submarines.
