Summarize points made in the lecture. Be sure to explain how they cast doubt on the points expressed in the reading.
The lecturer refutes the claims made in the reading passage regarding privatized spaceflight. He expresses the following reasons for his disagreement with the reading passage.
The passage contends that privatized spaceflight will benefit space exploration with less cost involvement. On the contrary, the lecturer highlights two major points which will add to the cost i.e. space control systems which are to be installed to check and avoid a collision, also various safety tests for these spacecraft would be required before their commercialization. This will only add to the expenditure and will always be a necessity whenever a new privatized spacecraft is required. Therefore, prices in spaceflight will always be high to cover up the cost used during the initial phase.
The reading claims that privatization will accelerate the rate at which important scientific discoveries occur. Conversely, the lecturer states that there will be a delay in discoveries and scientific innovations because best engineers would be working on more commercial stuff. This would lead to a serious problem wherein scientific innovations and discoveries at the important organization would hold no interest.
Finally, the reading claims that the financial burden of the taxpayer would be reduced with this privatization. However, the lecturer disagrees with this by stating that privatization spaceflight technology will have huge public tax subsidy. They won't be able to raise huge money out of it instead will have to pay more to subsidize.
In conclusion, the points made in the reading regarding the benefits of privatizing spaceflight are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
