Essay topics:

Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how the proposal discussed in the lecture would solve the specific challenges described in the reading passage.

The reading and the lecture are both about the possibility of building a permanent human base on Venus. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made by the author of the reading. He says that it is certainly possible to maintain a presence on Venus.

To begin with, the author argues that the extreme pressure at Venus' surface is one problem of building a human presence. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He says that building a floating basement in the air rather than on the ground is the solution to this problem. This is because the pressure of a higher place is lower, and the pressure of 50 kilometers above the surface is equal to the pressure on earth. Therefore, the environment of Venus will not cause damage to the floating base.

Secondly, the author states that it is hard to maintain a regular supply of water and oxygen on Venus since there is hardly any oxygen or water vapor on the planet's atmosphere. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He believes that there is plenty of carbon dioxide and other chemical matters can be used to make water, which means people can easily obtain enough water on Venus.

Finally, the author claims that the lack of light caused by the thick cloud will prevent the use of solar power cells. The lecturer, on the other hand, feels that the atmosphere level is not that thick, so a lot of sunlight still can be received. Besides, the reflected sunlight can also be used to generate power.
