summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard on apes can communicate, explaining how they cast doubt on the points made in reading

The reading and lecture both are about animal and their ability to communicate. The reading firmly arose some evidence to support the hypothesis that apes are capable of understanding language and can communicate. However, to solve this conflict that, are these animals really acquiring knowledge? He gives mentions a few criteria and studies to prove the statement.

Firstly passage claim that animals can communicate, just because these animals don't look similar to human, doesn't mean they cannot understand and learn the language. In addition, the researchers who had worked closely with apes, they have provided evidence that gorillas use sign language to show humor, to insult, to threaten and to engage in fantasy play. However, the lecturer counters this point by saying maybe its because animals have an emotional attachment with their owners, so they listen and communicate with them.

The author makes the point stronger by giving more examples .first he mentions about koko, lowland gorilla seems to understand a poem written for her. Second, an adult chimpanzee was raised as if she was deaf by teaching sign language, and she was able to communicate through signs. At last, he mentions a chimpanzee named kanzi was able to communicate using a keyboard of symbols. The speaker articulated that we can say animals can communicate if they pass these test. First of all the signers must be able to use language creatively. Second, they should be able to take turns in conversation and they should be spontaneous. Moreover, they must be able to comment on an interesting phenomenon. But as per studies, apes have not passed these criteria.

Finally, to solve this conflict apes can communicate or not .a neurophysiologist using modern technique MRI, they compare the brain activity of human while communicating and of apes. The result can help us to conclude.
