read about the advantages of driverless cars, also called self-driving or autonomous
cars. The technology is simple to understand: using sensors and computers, these
cars can drive without input from a human. This might sound like science fiction, but
such vehicles are already on our roads and they will have a positive impact on our
driving experience.
Traffic accidents are a leading cause of injuries and fatalities in the United States,
and studies show that most crashes are caused by human error. The software that
runs driverless cars is not capable of making mistakes. As a result, such vehicles will
be much safer. One technology company has a self-driving car that has driven for
over 700,000 miles – over one million kilometers – without an accident: a better
record than all but the best human drivers.
In addition, self-driving vehicles are good for the environment because they drive
more efficiently. On a typical journey within a city, drivers deal with urban traffic by
stopping and starting their engines repeatedly. This type of driving means engines
work less efficiently and this causes a lot of pollution. Driverless cars, on the other
hand, can communicate with other vehicles, which will reduce traffic problems.
Autonomous cars will be able to start and stop their engines less often and travel at
higher speeds.
Finally, autonomous cars will give passengers time. Instead of having to focus on
driving, human occupants can focus on other things. The average time for
commuting to and from work in the United States is about thirty minutes each way.
Instead of using this time to focus on the road, passengers in driverless cars can
read, watch videos, or catch up on work.
The article and lecture deals with Self-driving automated cars. Whilst the author thinks that Self-driving automated cars can have very own advantages he additionally describes some of the reasons for it, on the contrary the lecturer argues with author’s claims with the specific disadvantages by mentioning his reasons.
First, Author mentions that current self-driving cars come up with varieties of embedded software which helps owner for various advantages. Furthermore he adds that software driven cars are less prone to accidents that human driven cars. Additionally he makes an example that one company tested their automated car and it travelled for 700,000 miles without any accident. In the contrast of this author’s claim lecturer argues that the software mentioned by the author are designed and developed by humans only so they also can lead to accident of the vehicle. Second, Author mentions that in daily driving in traffic humans operates the vehicles by turning their engines off and on several times which result in higher pollution and environment degradation, furthermore he includes that self-driving car are software enabled so they drive the cars efficiently with reducing the pollutants emission. On the other hand lecturer argues that if self-driven cars are introduced in the market then more peoples will buy it because it need not require a license and there will be more cars and traffic on the roads which will paradoxically increase the pollution in environment.
Last but not the least author mentions that self-driving cars will help their owners in a way that they need not keep attention to driving and in this time which is mentioned by the author (the average time of united states people spent in the car during transportation), peoples can do another work like reading, writing or watching a video. On this the lecturer further argues that peoples love driving the cars they find driving relaxing and they do work whole time when they are not on the roads so it will result in a boring and disinterested life and it can also end up in waste of time.
